The little charming city of Apia in the South Pacific Ocean is the capital and largest city of Western Samoa, renamed as the Independent State of Samoa. It is located in Upolu, one of the country’s two main islands, on the opening of the Vaisigano River and near Mount Vaea. Despite the presence of European influence in the city, just like the rest of Western Samoa, Apia has still preserved its traditional culture, language and lifestyle.

Apia is the place where the famed Scottish writer, Robert Louis Stevenson, lived his last four years. Tourist are welcome to visit his home, now the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, in the Village of Vailima, and his grave atop Mt. Vaea.

While still in Apia, take some time for a nature trip to Papapapaitai Falls to appreciate the grandeur of freshwater plunging from a height of 500 feet into a volcanic crater. For a more adventurous family fun, take delight at the Papasee'a Sliding Rocks where they can slide down atop the three waterfalls.

Experience the simple pleasure of the locals in this quaint city by taking a stroll along the sea wall late in the afternoon. To find interesting Samoan souvenirs to bring home, make sure to head to the Old Apia Market. To take a glimpse of old Apia, visitors must head to the old ceremonial capital of Mulinu'u which holds the Parliament House and many historic buildings and structures. Also worthy of visit is the small Apia Museum which displays exhibits of Western Samoa’s history.

Travelers leaving from the Singapore Changi International Airport can take a plane to key cities in New Zealand and Australia, and from there, take a connecting flight to Apia. Air New Zealand has regularly flights from Auckland to Apia while Virgin Blue, for the same destination, maintains a regular set of flights from Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney. Estimated time travel from Singapore to Apia is 18 hours. International flights to Apia land at the Faleolo International Airport, located 40 kilometers away from the city center.
